What makes Cloverleaf duct systems different

Why is the back bedroom always warm? Usually it is the attic. Cloverleaf attics are small with low clearance. Flex runs get crushed against decking and rafters. A kinked run at the boot kills airflow no matter how clean the duct is. Cleaning alone will not fix that. The run has to be rehung or shortened.

This is an unincorporated community on the I-10 East corridor, postwar in origin. Most of it is compact 1950s-60s one-story frame and brick homes on slab. Single-wide hallway returns are standard here. One grille feeds the whole blower. That design pulls hard and loads the filter fast.

Freeway traffic and east-side industrial plumes add soot and particulate. Pull your filter and look at the pleat edges. If it reads gray within weeks, that is the corridor, not your house.

Many of these houses still run original galvanized trunks with degraded internal liner. Black fuzz at the register edge is the tell. Aggressive brushing can shed more of it. Sometimes the honest answer is to line or replace the trunk instead.

Low-lying drainage and ditch flooding affect ground-level ductwork. Check boot bottoms for rust staining and silt.

Frequently Asked Questions

My back bedrooms barely get any air. Will duct cleaning fix that?

Sometimes, but in Cloverleaf the more common cause is the attic. These postwar houses have shallow attics with little clearance, so flex runs get pressed flat between the decking and the rafters, or kinked around a brace. Cleaning won't restore a crushed duct. What we can do is tell you which it is. If the trunk and branches are loaded with dust and the return is choked, cleaning helps noticeably. If a run is pinched or has sagged into a trap, we'll show you where, and you'll know that repositioning or replacing that run is the real fix.

Our house still has the original metal ducts from the 50s. Is cleaning them a good idea or will it make things worse?

It depends on the condition of the internal liner. A lot of the original galvanized trunks around here have liner that's gone brittle and started shedding, and in that case aggressive brushing can pull more material loose than it removes. We open an access point and look first. Bare galvanized in sound shape cleans up well and is worth doing. Liner that's flaking or hanging in sheets is a replacement conversation, not a cleaning one, and we'd rather tell you that up front than take the job and hand you a worse system.

Why do my filters turn black so fast here?

Cloverleaf sits right on the I-10 corridor with industrial activity to the east, so the particulate load outdoors is higher than in neighborhoods further from the freeway. That soot gets pulled in through the return and through whatever gaps exist at the cabinet and the return boot. These houses typically have one wide hallway return doing all the work, so everything funnels through a single filter. Cleaning the system and sealing up leaks at the return helps, but a dark filter in this area is partly just the address. Expect to change it more often than the box suggests.

We had water in the yard and under the house after the last heavy rain. Does that affect the ducts?

It can, and it's worth checking. Much of Cloverleaf is low-lying with ditch drainage, and any ductwork running low, through a crawl area, a low return chase, or near a slab penetration, can take on moisture during a flood event. Wet fiberglass liner or a boot that held water will smell before it looks like anything, and that smell comes back every time the blower runs. If you had standing water, mention it when you call so we inspect the low runs specifically rather than just the attic side.

What Happens After You Call Us

Call and tell us what you're seeing, dust on the registers, weak airflow in the back bedrooms, a return that smelled wrong. We book a one hour arrival window and text you the tech's name.

He walks the house first, counts vents, checks the attic trunk line and plenum, and hands you a firm written quote. The estimate is free, and nothing gets opened until you say go.

We negative-air the system, brush and vacuum each run, replace the filter if you want, then run the AC so you feel the difference. Drop cloths come up, and you pay the quoted number.
