Why the far bedroom never cools, and what sealing actually fixes

The symptom is familiar. One room stays warm all afternoon. Humidity creeps up while the system runs nonstop. Dust fans out around the supply registers. In Houston that usually means attic leakage, not a weak compressor. Long flex runs sag between joists, kink behind kneewalls, and sometimes pull free at the takeoff entirely.

Sealing is joint-by-joint work. The inner core gets pulled fully over the metal collar and banded. Mastic goes on the collar, not tape alone. Hot attic air cooks tape adhesive until it curls and releases. Then the outer vapor jacket gets closed separately, since condensation forms on bare core in a humid attic.

Return side matters more than supply. A platform return framed in joists or wall cavities often leaks at every seam, pulling attic dust, insulation fiber, and rodent debris past the filter. Fiberglass ductboard plenums from the 1960s to 80s fail at staple lines and corners once the foil facing degrades. Register boots leak into the drywall gap, sealed from inside the room.

Sealing will not fix a system undersized on return air. If static pressure is already high and one central return whistles, sealing alone raises it further. That gets addressed first, or the comfort complaint stays.
