Does sanitizing actually fix a musty duct system?

Only if the cleaning came first. Antimicrobial product sprayed over loose debris does nothing lasting. Dust is the food source. Remove it, then treat the surface. We also check the label. A product has to be registered for use inside HVAC systems, applied the way that label reads. Fogging a whole house with a general disinfectant is not that.

Surface material decides what is possible. Galvanized trunk in 1950s–60s ranch stock takes a treatment well. Fiberglass ductboard plenums from the 1960s–80s do not. Once the facing degrades, the fiber is porous and already shedding. Same with the inner liner on sagging R-6 and R-8 flex in attics. Treating porous board that is coming apart just masks odor for a while. Replacing that section is the honest call.

Then find the water. Musty smell at startup usually traces back to a cold plenum surface, a rusted drain pan, or growth at register boots. Disconnected returns pulling humid attic air straight into the cabinet keep it coming back. So do silt lines in low-wall boots from flooding.

We tell you which ducts are worth treating and which are past it, before anything gets sprayed.
